My Little Sprinkles

Turns out Jillian is allergic to Amoxicillin.  And that we should probably stay away from the other -cillins too, like Penicillin for instance.  During her one year checkup the doctor noticed some fluid behind her ears and even though she wasn’t complaining gave her the antibiotics to stop the pending ear ache.  I sure am glad we caught it in time though, poor Cal.

She took the medicine for 8 days before we noticed anything so we didn’t think much of it.  At first it looked like a little heat rash, which the kids get down here all the time, because, well, it is hot all the time.  But as the weekend wore on she was covered head to toe.  On her face, her chest, her back and arms and legs.  Under her clothes and under her diaper.  So that ruled out the new laundry sheets.  By Monday she was a mess.  She’d gone from being covered in individual spots to being covered (on some parts of her body) by one big red amorphous blob.

In to the doctor we went.  He said allergy to the antibiotics, nothing we can do.  So we didn’t do anything.  It doesn’t bother her and it is almost all gone now.  Just a few sprinkles left on her legs.  We did skip the Austin Hot Sauce Festival on Sunday though for fear that either the rash was photosensitive (it was worse on her face and arms) or that it would not react pleasantly with sunscreen

Streptococcusaurus Wes

Wesley has strep throat. He had been burning up for about three days with fevers fluctuating between about 99.5 and 103 degrees F. He seemed to get hottest at night and he had a hard time sleeping requiring either Amber or me to be in bed with him at least once and often two or three times a night. His appetite was down and he was grumpier than usual. For a while he was even, get this, lethargic. He didn’t want to run around outside, he wanted to curl up on the couch. We knew he was sick. We checked with the doctor’s office and they said, three days of fever bring him in”, so we did. The trouble with Wesley, is that even when he is really sick other people look at him hanging upside down, running around, and babbling nonstop and think he is fine. We look at him and think “huh, he isn’t also running in circles, playing trucks, jumping off of the table and pushing chairs around the room simultaneously, he must be sick.” They did a strep test and a flu test just in case. The strep case came back positive.

Today Wesley’s fever was down and he had a bit more energy than the last few days. We were playing when I noticed a little rash on his neck. We took a closer look and found it all over his core. His arms and legs were fine. It didn’t seem to be bothering him, but since he was taking amoxicillin for the first we thought it would be best to check with the doctor. He hadn’t eaten any new foods, we hadn’t changed soaps, shampoos, or laundry detergent. He hadn’t worn any new clothes. So, we switched meds to cefprozil today. The rash was getting worse by the minute, spreading up to his scalp while at the doctor’s, but is almost completely gone now. It may have just been a fever rash, but better safe than sorry.

He is definitely feeling better. He has more energy and would once again rather run around that sit on the couch. He isn’t all better, still grumpy and a bit hard to please, but getting better. His appetite is still off, he didn’t eat any of his pizza at Costco tonight, but I bet he’ll be up bright and early and raring to go tomorrow.
