Tomorrow , Barack Obama will become the president of these United States. While I did vote for him, I’m not under the delusion that he’ll cure all the ills. That really is up to the people and sadly as bad as things are we haven’t hit rock bottom yet. And as any 12-stepper knows you have to hit rock bottom before things will really change.
What I am glad about is that Barack Obama, with any luck, will be my kids’ president. He’ll be the man that they think of when they think of that office. For me it is Regan. He was president for such a long period of my childhood that he sort of sets the standard (not that I now remotely agree with much of what he did). As a kid you simply believe in the president as the most important person without any kind of political filter. His picture is in your class room. He’s on TV all the time. Your parents talk about him. He’s an important guy and has an impact on your life. Heck I even had a President’s fitness challenge certificate (that one was signed by the first Bush).
I’m just glad that Wes and Jillian will have someone they can look up to and someone I can help them be proud of. My fingers are crossed that he is able to accomplish all he wishes, but if nothing else that he gives my children something they can believe in. A symbol to look up to without feeling ashamed.
