Wesley has strep throat. He had been burning up for about three days with fevers fluctuating between about 99.5 and 103 degrees F. He seemed to get hottest at night and he had a hard time sleeping requiring either Amber or me to be in bed with him at least once and often two or three times a night. His appetite was down and he was grumpier than usual. For a while he was even, get this, lethargic. He didn’t want to run around outside, he wanted to curl up on the couch. We knew he was sick. We checked with the doctor’s office and they said, three days of fever bring him in”, so we did. The trouble with Wesley, is that even when he is really sick other people look at him hanging upside down, running around, and babbling nonstop and think he is fine. We look at him and think “huh, he isn’t also running in circles, playing trucks, jumping off of the table and pushing chairs around the room simultaneously, he must be sick.” They did a strep test and a flu test just in case. The strep case came back positive.
Today Wesley’s fever was down and he had a bit more energy than the last few days. We were playing when I noticed a little rash on his neck. We took a closer look and found it all over his core. His arms and legs were fine. It didn’t seem to be bothering him, but since he was taking amoxicillin for the first we thought it would be best to check with the doctor. He hadn’t eaten any new foods, we hadn’t changed soaps, shampoos, or laundry detergent. He hadn’t worn any new clothes. So, we switched meds to cefprozil today. The rash was getting worse by the minute, spreading up to his scalp while at the doctor’s, but is almost completely gone now. It may have just been a fever rash, but better safe than sorry.
He is definitely feeling better. He has more energy and would once again rather run around that sit on the couch. He isn’t all better, still grumpy and a bit hard to please, but getting better. His appetite is still off, he didn’t eat any of his pizza at Costco tonight, but I bet he’ll be up bright and early and raring to go tomorrow.

Wildflowers are a bloom here in Austin. They seem to be everywhere right now.
These are some that I picked in a field near the small playground at the park.
Now imagine a ton of pictures on flickr with the kids playing and sitting in a field of mostly blue and bits of the red and pink (like the ones above) … That is what you will have to do because I did not LISTEN to Joshua!
Two nights ago Joshua came home from a run and told me about a great field near our house with a ton of Texas Wildflowers in it. He suggested for me to go the next morning and take some pictures – because he thought it would get mowed soon.
Well it was really windy yesterday morning, Wesley was still sick and I was feeling very tired – so I did not go to take pictures.
Later that afternoon we headed out to the little playground (without the camera). I was fearful of the trip because neither Jillian or Wesley had taken a nap, but we needed fresh air and I wanted Wesley to get some of his built up energy out (he had been running a fever of 102 for the past 2 days and was really crabby – but as it turns out he has strep throat – we took him to the doctor after our trip to the park). Jillian fell asleep in the Ergo and Wesley walked/ran the way there.
Before we could even see the playground and field with the flowers, I heard the lawnmower. I thought…ok they will just mow around the flowers BUT…damn Joshua was right, they are mowing!
Sure enough there was a man working on the field. Wesley and I went to an area that he was not at and picked some of the beautiful “weeds” that were to be mowed down.
Hopefully we will get some pictures of the kiddos in the Texas blue bells soon – we better go soon or they might all be mowed down.

A few nights ago I came down to get Wesley more water at 12:30am and I turned on the light to find a HUGE spider waiting for me. I tried to scare him away by throwing pieces of paper in his direction – no luck. OK now what am I going to do?? I went into the living room – looking very carefully at the ground to make sure he did not have an accomplices – and put on Joshua’s shoes. I carefully walked over the the fridge, then to the sink and back out of the kitchen. I don’t think the intruder noticed, because he did not move at all… Then I turned off the light and went to sit with Wesley while he was sick. All I could think of was that damn spider. Every time I closed my eyes there he was. He made my stomach turn and I got a creepy feeling.
I told Joshua about it in the morning and he said he looked for me, but the only signs the intruder had been there were the 4 pieces of paper strewn about the kitchen.
Then yesterday Wesley, Jillian and I got back from a walk to the park and there sitting next to the hearth was that damn spider again. At first I thought he was one of Wesley’s toy spiders – but the way he had some of his legs up on the brick I knew he was real. I called Joshua and he said he was on his way home anyway and that if it was still there he would take care of it for me.
So I got out the camera – to prove to Joshua that the spider was real and that it was HUGE. I snapped the pictures and I had that stomach turning creepy feeling the whole time. I did not want him to escape Joshua again. So I did every thing I could to stay far away from him until Joshua came home.
Joshua came home and the first thing he did was take a look. I don’t think he thought it was as big as I thought it was… But he got a pitcher and a piece of paper and went to work to trap the spider so he could set it free outside.
I am happy that our unwelcome house guest it no longer in the house. I can walk around more peacefully now……until the next intruder scares me in the middle of the night and Joshua has to come and rescue me. Thank goodness for great husbands!!
The boy likes to cook. That has been well established. Last night it was just him and me for dinner as Amber and Jillian were out with friends. So I let him cook our dinner.
He made us Ravioli and corn and did all the following steps:
- put the corn in the pan
- added the water to the corn
- got out the big stock pot
- added water to the pot
- added fistfuls of salt to the water
- put the Raviolis in the pot
- scooped out the floating raviolis with a long handled strainer (he thought it was cool that they float when they are done)
- added the sauce
- spooned out the corn
- put cheese on top (his idea, I wasn’t even going to have cheese)
I’m here to tell you that it was yummy!
